長年に渡ってポートレートのシリーズを制作したのち、ポール・ストランドはフランスのオルゲバルある自邸の庭で静物写真を撮影するようになる。この本に収録された作品群は自然の中にある形や様式についての丹念な観察から生み出された。ストランドらしいストレートなアングルで撮影された作品群は、有名な写真家ジョエル・メイロウィッツがそうであったように、さまざまなジャンルのものを撮影したのちに最終的には究極の主題として自然に回帰していくという暗喩をはらんでいる。控えめなサイズで作られたこの美しい本は、最後の仕事としてストランドの名を記す役割を担った本でもある。
