ヨーゼフ・ボイスは、作品制作の様子や旅をしている所、家の中でなど、生涯の内にさまざまな場所で写真を撮られている。しかしグラフィックアーティストのKlaus Staeckと出版社のGerhard Steidlほどボイスを自由に撮影し、またボイスに固執した写真家は少ない。
２人は1970年から、ボイスが亡くなる1986年までボイスに同行していた。誰よりも近くでボイスと製作をともにした２人の写真は、ボイスに会った人物だけでなく社会や芸術に対して影響を与えた彼のカリスマ的な個性を写し取っている。
