本書はAndreas Gurskyの新しいバンコクシリーズを主題としている。Gurskyの写真は、タイのチャオプラヤー川の暗く移り行く水を捉えているが、そのきらめく水面は抽象絵画のようだ。実際にこれらの写真はHans Arpのようなモダニズム抽象絵画を思い起こさせるが、迷彩柄のようにも見える。一見すると魅惑的に美しく見えるが、文明化が生み出したゴミが水面に浮かんでいるのが見えてくる。Gurskyはバンコクを脅かす環境問題について暗示しているが、この写真が撮影されて間もなくして、タイの大部分を襲った洪水が発生した。
