花、ドクロ、コンタクトシートの間にある共通点とは？
本書は、David Baileyの近作である花とドクロの静物カラー写真を、1960年代の代表的な有名人のポートレートやファッションフォトの白黒コンタクトシートと共に収録している。おそらく多くの人がBaileyのこれらの作品体系をvanitasの慣例（生の儚さや時間の経過という伝統的テーマ）と関連づけて見るだろう。実際、萎れたバラの写真をBrian JonesやJohn Lennonなどのコンタクトシートとあわせて見たときそう発想しがちではあるが、実はそれは考え過ぎなのかもしれない。Bailey自身もおそらくそう一蹴するだろう。彼にとって花、ドクロ、コンタクトシートのプロジェクトは単に同時期に進めていた個別のものであって、これら3つを組み合わせたのも折衷的作品を好んだからではないだろうか。
