ガゴシアンギャラリーで行われた展覧会[Detached]ではレイチェル・ホワイトリードの新作となる彫刻が展示され、本書は同展に合わせて制作された。タイトルは彼女の制作過程から付けられている。うわの空で現実から距離を置いた彼女の制作スタイルは作家として本質的なものだといえる。
ホワイトリードの彫刻は鋳造過程と最終形が引き出される犠牲的な物体や空間に残された痕跡に基づいており、彼女は日常で使われる物、家具や建築の周りにある物、単体のゴムやプラスター、樹脂をそれぞれのニュアンスを記録している。
